During a routine traffic stop, French police detained a woman who they determined was a Basque separatist wanted by the Spanish authorities. Although she was a French citizen, and her activities were not illegal under French law, she was taken into custody and handed over to the Spanish government. This process was made possible by the European Arrest Warrant, which allows citizens in one EU country to be arrested and transferred to another country where there is a warrant outstanding for their arrest, without the necessity of formal extradition.

In other news, the Saudi authorities are planning to demolish some of the most ancient shrines in Mecca and replace them with modern buildings to be used for housing or business. Islamic fundamentalists consider the shrines to be “idolatry”, and so are in favor of their destruction.
